Nigeria will do well at the World Cup, says Mikel
wave of being African champions to have a successful campaign at
Brazil 2014
By RAMSEY DUBEM
Dec 22, 2013 7:35:00 AM
Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel believes that his country will do
well at the World Cup by riding on the confidence of being reigning
Africa Cup of Nations champions.
The Super Eagles won their third African title in February and will go
to Brazil 2014 as the first reigning African champions since 2002 when
Cameroon held the title and also played at the World Cup.
Nigeria are drawn in Group F alongside perennial foes Argentina, Asian
high flyers Iran and debutants Bosnia-Herzegovina.
"I think being African champions has given us a huge lift. I think the
mentality of the team has changed in the past couple of years, we
believe now that we can go into every game and win," Mikel
toldGoalwhile receiving the 2013 Goal Nigeria Player of the Year
award, beating compatriots Vincent Enyeama, Emmanuel Emenike, Victor
Moses and Godfrey Oboabona to it.
The Super Eagles already have a foretaste of what to expect next year
after this summer's campaign in the Confederations Cup saw them win
against Tahiti and lose against Uruguay and Spain.
"If you look at the games we played in the Confederations Cup, we put
on a very good performance in all the games. We were unlucky in the
game against Uruguay, I think we should have beaten them by four or
five. If you look at the game against Spain, we played really well but
they just had that little bit of quality to get the goals," he said.
With Ghana's quarter final finish at South Africa 2010, the Super
Eagles are being touted by their fans to go a place better than their
neighbours in Brazil.
"I think the Africa Cup of Nations has given us a lot of belief to go
into the World Cup - I know we can do well," Mikel said.
Commenting on the return of manager Jose Mourinho to Chelsea, Mikel
said that with time the Blues will begin to win every game.
"It's been good, he's back," said Mikel. "We haven't hit the heights
that everyone wants us to hit but there have been changes, he's come
in with a different philosophy but still the mentality that we want to
win every game and he is putting that into all the players.
"It's going to take a bit of time but it's something we're working
towards. Hopefully we will start to hit our heights soon and be
playing consistently well but right now I think we're in a very good
position in the Premier League and the Champions League so if we can
pick the standard up even higher I think it will be a very successful
year," he said.
Ribery: Ballon d'Or win would be for my dad
and claims he holds no grudge against Arjen Robben for backing
Cristiano Ronaldo
By RAMSEY DUBEM
Dec 22, 2013 1:00:00 PM
Franck Ribery hopes that he can secure the Ballon d'Or after his
exploits with Bayern Munichin 2013, saying that it would be great for
him and his family.
The Frenchman featured as the Bavarians overcame Raja Casablanca on
Saturday to lift the Club World Cup, their fifth trophy in 2013 to add
to their Champions League, Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Uefa Super Cup
wins.
Ribery stressed that his stellar year should put him firmly in
contention for the Ballon d'Or alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano
Ronaldo and that he would dedicate the win in part to his construction
worker father, Francois.
"It was an extraordinary year, for the club, the people and for me,"
he toldTelefoot. "We broke everything record-wise. We took a lot of
pleasure on and off the pitch.
"I have put in so much effort on the pitch. I think I deserved the
Uefa European Best Player award. I would be very happy to win the
Ballon d'Or. It would be great for me, my wife, my kids and my
father."
The future France international was two years old when he was
propelled through a car windscreen as his father Francois Ribery
slammed on the brakes to avoid a head-on collision, though it left his
son scarred for life.
The winger also commented on team-mate Arjen Robben, playing down any
disappointment at the fact that the Dutchman publicly expressed his
backing for Ronaldo in the race to be named Ballon d'Or winner.
"He corrected himself quickly," the 30-year-old added. "Everyone can
give their thoughts, no problem.
"It is already something extraordinary to be nominated alongside
Ronaldo and Messi. I have every chance, I was there in the big games.
It is the best year of my career."
The winner of the Ballon d'Or will be announced in a ceremony in
Zurich on January 13

Putin 'to pardon' jailed former oil tycoon Khodorkovsky
Russian President Vladimir Putin says he will soon pardon jailed
former tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
Mr Putin said he had received a request from Khodorkovsky - in custody
for a decade - to pardon him on humanitarian grounds as his mother is
ill.
Khodorkovsky's representatives said they needed to meet him before
commenting but that the family would be "elated to see him finally
freed".
On Wednesday, MPs backed a wide-ranging amnesty for at least 20,000 prisoners.
Speaking to reporters after his annual news conference in Moscow on
Thursday, Mr Putin confirmed the amnesty would apply to the two
members of punk band Pussy Riot still in prison and Greenpeace
activists detained for their protest at a Russian oil rig in the
Arctic.
Analysts say Mr Putin may be trying to ease international criticism of
Russia's human rights record ahead of February's Winter Olympics in
the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

Solve Your Relationship Problems With These 7 Simple Steps
If you've been feeling frustrated that your relationship is in trouble, don't panic! It's important to try to recharge your battery together.
Here are 7 surprisingly effective quick fixes to fix your relationship.
1. Soup Up The Sex
There's always room for improvement in your sex lives! You can start by setting aside more intimate time. Then, figure out how to make the sex you have even better. For example, add music. Spend more time being affectionate before you hit the bed. Move more and use those pelvic muscles. Even take a look at some how-to sex books. The reality is that sexual connection is the key reset button for elevating the tone of a relationship, in both men and women!
2. Switch Your Focus
Because eyes look outward it can be easy to fall into the trap of focusing on what your partner does that bugs you. Better, though, to stop trying to change your partner. Re-focus your eyes on insight. Figure out whatyoucan do differently. How would your changes lighten up both of your lives?
3. Do The Math
Focus just on how to add more affection and appreciation into your relationship. Subtract out negatives like criticism, disagreement, blame and complaints.
4. Look Ahead
Focusing on the past risks feeding old resentments and disappointments. Instead, figure out what a great relationship would look like and start acting that way — today. Placing your energy on future goals as a couple will help you create a game plan for getting there.
5. Mind Your 3-Letter Words
Eliminate the word "but"when speaking to your partner. Each time you respond with "but…"you are erasing what you just heard, making your partner feel erased, too. Eliminate "not"too: I'mnotpleased, I don'twant to, etc… Instead, use lots of "Yes!"
6. Stay In The Calm Zone
Anger is very off-putting. Sadness is healthy to share, and anxiety too. Anger, by contrast, drives your partner away. If your partner initiates an angry interaction, you'll be at risk for catching fire, so exit ASAP. Stand up, saying something like, "Excuse me, I need to get a drink of water," and use your legs to get out of range. When you return, initiate affection and change the topic.
7. Have More Fun
Fun doesn't have to cost money. Turn on music while you do dishes together. Go outdoors and enjoy the sunshine. Or do just about anything that's different. New, with a positive attitude, is invigorating.
At some point you also will want to dig deeper to fix the broken pieces in your relationship, especially if they are tough ones like addictions, excessive anger, infidelity, financial problems or communication problems. But it's helpful to first use the tips above to fix your relationship connection.
Why start this way? The key is to understand what a relationship is — and what makes two people feel connected. Mostly, the vibes you radiate toward each other each when you interact with each other is what makes you feel like "we have a great relationship" or "our relationship needs fixing." So, use these 7 tips to strengthen the positives in your partnership.

Roney rejects Manchester united contract...
a new deal as he eyes a move away from Old Trafford, with his current
terms due to expire in 2015
Dec 11, 2013 8:25:00 AMEXCLUSIVE
By Greg Stobart
Wayne Rooney has rejected Manchester United's latest attempts to open
talks over a new contract.
The striker and his representatives are refusing to even discuss an
extension, with the England international's existing terms set to
expire at the end of next season.
Goalrevealed in October that Rooney had rejected United's first
approach to discuss a contract renewalas he continues to explore the
possibility of leaving the club.
The 28-year-old and his camp have declined further offers from the
club in recent weeks to start negotiating, with United willl to give
him a four-year deal.
Rooney has begun the season in outstanding form, scoring eight goals
in 13 Premier League appearances for the side during a difficult start
for new boss David Moyes that has left the reigning champions ninth in
the table.
Publicly, Moyes insisted last week that a new deal for the England
international "will be done in good course" but Rooney is understood
to remain keen to seek a fresh challenge at another Champions League
club.
"Wayne is resisting any and all attempts from the club to talk about
his contract situation," a source toldGoal.
"He knows, more than anything, that with his contract running down and
in the form that he is in, he holds all the aces."
Rooney and his agent, Paul Stretford, are well aware that they are in
a strong position to engineer a transfer in the summer, when the
player will have just one year remaining on his contract.
Indeed, sources close to the situation have told Goal that Rooney is
increasingly aware of the renewed interest in him from leading clubs
both abroad and domestically.
Chelsea made two bids for Rooney in the summer after being told that
the former Everton man wanted to move to Stamford Bridge and there was
also strong interest from Arsenal up until the final week of the
window.
United refused to sell Rooney to Chelsea, a club whom they regard as a
principal title rival but the league champions could be backed into a
corner if the forward pushes hard for a transfer either in January or
next summer while refusing to extend his weekly salaray of £250,000
(€300,000).
Wizkid and Akon Reject Dark-Skinned Models For Video Shoot
A model reported on the day of the shoot some girls were turned away as the agent (or the man responsible for calling them) informed them that "they now want half cast girls". A term used to describe girls with mixed heritage, usually ones with white blood in them.
"THEY", most likely referring to WizKid, Akon and/or his music video producer, turning away a fleet of arrivals originally requested to attend by the model scout. In fact, the agent requested if the girls could help him seek light skinned girls because 'THEY' were so adamant on this request even on late notice.
Nigeria, where WizKid is from, and Senegal where Akon is from, are countries both flooded with girls bleaching their skin simply because of such discrimination and being made to feel ugly if dark. Not just in media and modelling, but general favours in life. Whilst there are good people in both countries trying to reverse the self esteem damage of such activities such as Adama Paris who banned skinned bleach models from the Senegalese national fashion week, Akon and Wiz Kid's team are trying to further such acts internationally.

NEWS: Highlight on Nelson Mandela 1918- 2013
ANC involvement
Mandela was educated at the University of Fort Hare and later at the University of Witwatersrand, qualifying in law in 1942. He became increasingly involved with the African National Congress (ANC), a multi-racial nationalist movement trying to bring about political change in South Africa.
In 1948, the National Party came to power and began to implement a policy of 'apartheid', or forced segregation on the basis of race. The ANC staged a campaign of passive resistance against apartheid laws.
In 1952, Mandela became one of the ANC's deputy presidents. By the late 1950s, faced with increasing government discrimination, Mandela, his friend Oliver Tambo and others began to move the ANC in a more radical direction. In 1956, Mandela went on trial for treason. The court case lasted five years, and ended with Mandela being acquitted
Sharpeville
In March 1960, 69 black anti-apartheid demonstrators were killed by police at Sharpeville. The government declared a state of emergency and banned the ANC. In response, the organisation abandoned its policy of non-violence and Mandela helped establish the ANC's military wing 'Umkhonto we Sizwe' or 'The Spear of the Nation'. He was appointed its commander-in-chief and travelled abroad to receive military training and to find support for the ANC.
Life imprisonment
On his return he was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. In 1963, Mandela and other ANC leaders were tried for plotting to overthrow the government by violence. The following year Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was held in Robben Island prison, off the coast of Cape Town, and later in Pollsmoor Prison on the mainland. During his years in prison he became an international symbol of resistance to apartheid.
In 1990, the South African government responded to internal and international pressure and released Mandela, at the same time lifting the ban against the ANC. In 1991 Mandela became the ANC's leader.
A respected global statesman
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with FW de Klerk, then president of South Africa, in 1993.
The following year South Africa held its first multi-racial election and Mandela was elected its first black president.
In 1998, he was married for the third time to Graça Machel, the widow of the president of Mozambique. Mandela's second wife, Winnie, whom he married in 1958 and divorced in 1996, remains a controversial anti-apartheid activist.
In 1997 he stepped down as ANC leader and in 1999 his presidency of South Africa came to an end.
In 2004, Mandela announced his retirement from public life, although his charitable work continued. On 29 August 2007, a permanent statue to him was unveiled in Parliament Square, London.
He died on 5 December 2013, aged 95.

Nelson Mandela's Most Powerful Quotes
"Difficulties break some men but make others. No axe is sharp enough to cut the soul of a sinner who keeps on trying, one armed with the hope that he will rise even in the end."

The Real Madrid boss says that he would look to strengthening other positions in the squad rather than acquiring the Barcelona star
to sign Barcelonaforward Lionel Messibecause he already has Cristiano
Ronaldo.
The Portuguese has received widespread acclaim for his performances
this season, including a stunning hat-trick for his country in the
second leg of their World Cup play-off with Sweden, which sealed their
place at Brazil 2014.
The 28-year-old has also excelled at club level too and is a firm
favourite to lift the Ballon d'Or in January, and Ancelotti says he
would strengthen in other positions of his side rather than bring in
the Argentine to the Bernabeu.
"If I could sign one player for Real Madrid, it wouldn't be Messi, I'd
rather reinforce another position," he told Italian broadcasterRadio
Capital.
"We have Cristiano, who needs Messi? God gave him [Ronaldo] a special gift."
However, Ancelotti did joke that the capital outfit might be
interested in bringing Messi to the club should Barca decide to sell
the Argentine.
He added: "If Barca sell Messi, they should call us."
"Lost" Amazon Complex Found; Shapes Seen by Satellite
by forest hint at a previously unknown ancient society that flourished
in the Amazon, a new study says.
Satellite images of the upper Amazon Basin taken since 1999 have
revealed more than 200 geometric earthworks spanning a distance
greater than 155 miles (250 kilometers).
(Related: "Huge Pre-Stonehenge Complex Found via 'Crop Circles.'")
Now researchers estimate that nearly ten times as many such
structures—of unknown purpose—may exist undetected under the Amazon's
forest cover.
At least one of the sites has been dated to around A.D. 1283, although
others may date as far back as A.D. 200 to 300, said study co-author
Denise Schaan, an anthropologist at the Federal University of Pará in
Belém, Brazil.
The discovery adds to evidence that the hinterlands of the Amazon
once teemed with complex societies, which were largely wiped out by
diseases brought to South America by European colonists in the 15th
and 16th centuries, Schaan said.
Since these vanished societies had gone unrecorded, previous research
had suggested that soilsin the upper Amazon were too poor to support
the extensive agriculture needed for such large, permanent
settlements.
"We found that this picture is wrong," Schaan said. "And there is a
lot more to discover in these places."
Wide-reaching Culture
The newfound shapes are created by a series of trenches about 36 feet
(11 meters) wide and several feet deep, with adjacent banks up to 3
feet (1 meter) tall. Straight roads connect many of the earthworks.
Preliminary excavations at one of the sites in 2008 revealed that some
of the earthworks were surrounded by low mounds containing domestic
ceramics, charcoal, grinding-stone fragments, and other evidence of
habitation.
But who built the structures and what functions they served remains a
mystery. Ideas range from defensive buildings to ceremonial centers
and homes, the study authors say.
It's also possible the structures served different purposes over time,
noted William Woods, a geographer and anthropologist at the University
of Kansas in Lawrence who was not involved in the research.
"For example," he said, "in Lawrence there's a Masonic temple—it is
now a bar. There was a bank—it is now a restaurant called Tellers.
These things happen."
What most surprised the research team is that the earthworks appear in
both the region's floodplains and the uplands.
In general, the Amazon's fertile floodplains have been popular sites
for ancient civilizations, while the sparser uplands have been thought
to be largely devoid of people, the researchers say.
What's more, the earthworks in both regions are of a similar style,
suggesting they were built by the same society.
"In Amazonian archaeology you always have this idea that you find
different peoples in different ecosystems," study co-author Schaan
said.
"And so it was kind of odd to have a culture that would take advantage
of different ecosystems and expand over such a large region."
"Astounding" Population
The uplands sites appear to have been home to as many as 60,000
people, Schaan and her colleagues suggest in their paper, published
this month in the journalAntiquity.
That figure is based on estimates of the social organization and labor
that would have been required to build the structures hinted at by the
remaining earthworks.
According to the University of Kansas' Woods, the population estimate
is reasonable, albeit rough, since so little is known about these
complexes.
Answers may emerge as researchers continue to excavate the newfound
shapes in the coming years.
But Woods is impressed by the possibility that so many people might
have once lived in a region long thought uninhabited.
"Traditionally, if you would have asked an anthropologist or
archaeologist how many people lived [in these Amazon uplands], they'd
say almost zero," he said.
"And so this is astounding that there is 60,000 people making a go of
it where there aren't supposed to be any."
